Moreton Bay Region Libraries are taking the lead in play-based learning with over 160 people attending the Festival of Play Forum, in a sell-out success.

Industry experts, educators and community organisations travelled from afar to North Lakes Community Centre for the free, one-day only event.

“There wasn’t a spare seat in the room, a marvellous result for the Festival of Play Forum,” Acting Mayor Mike Charlton said.

“Today’s conversation centred around improving learning, education and literacy through play, with a range of sessions delving into neuroscience, play in formal schooling, best practice examples and much more.

“The Moreton Bay Region has a comparatively high percentage of developmentally-vulnerable children compared to national averages.

“Our libraries have been working hard to address this issue by collaborating with leading authorities, academic experts and experienced practitioners.

“Events like this further cement Moreton Bay Region Libraries as a leader in the development of early childhood learning, language and literacy in the region.

Spokesperson for libraries Cr Denise Sims (Div 7) said one exciting initiative to come out of the forum is the development of a Pop-Up Play Space (PUPS).

“The aim of the PUPS is to engage both children and parents through different styles of play to assist in early learning,” she said.

“There are so many new and interesting events and programs taking place in our libraries, giving locals even more reason to make the visit.

“PUPS is made possible thanks to grant funding through the Queensland Government’s First Five Forever Program.”

International guest speaker and neuroscience educator, Nathan Wallis said today’s conversation was another step in the right direction towards improving early literacy.

“Research continues to show us that play-based learning is significantly better than teacher-led instruction in those precious early childhood years,” he said.

“I’ve thoroughly enjoyed sharing how neuroscience can better inform our interaction with young children in North Lakes and sharing my knowledge and experience on the vital impact play has on developing young brains.”

This program is proudly funded and supported by the Queensland Government, State Library of Queensland and Moreton Bay Regional Council.
