Moreton Bay’s ever-expanding sports program has served up another ace, with Tennis Queensland signing up to manage the new $3 million tennis centre in Narangba.
Currently under construction, Mayor Peter Flannery said that when the brand-new facility at Harris Avenue Sports Complex opens in June 2021 it will be under the direction of the best in the business to ensure its success.
“I’d like to thank Tennis Queensland for their willingness to be the inaugural lessee, to help get a local tennis club established and coach in place,” he said.
“This precinct will boast six courts, clubhouse and carparking; so if your kid’s considering a new sport next year why not give tennis a shot?
“Council has an ambitious sports infrastructure program and we continue racking up wins, like yesterday’s announcement that Brisbane Roar will be playing all their home A-League matches in Redcliffe.
“We want to make sure we’re continuing to upgrade our facilities with population growth, that’s why Council has increased its investment into sports infrastructure by more than 40% in this year’s 2020-21 Budget – up from $34 million last financial year to $49 million.
“This particular build was made possible thanks to a $2 million contribution from the Queensland Government’s Unite and Recover Community Stimulus Package and I thank them for partnering with us.”
Kurwongbah MP Shane King said the stimulus program had helped keep people employed through COVID.
“Tennis is a lifelong sport you can play at any age, but the best thing about this project is that it’s providing an immediate boost to the local construction sector,” he said.
“Getting money to Councils to quickly turn around works like this through COVID has proven to be one of the most successful strategies to keep our economy working through these tough times.
“This is also an important investment in the liveability of Narangba and surrounding areas, giving locals a variety of competitive sport and recreation options.
Tennis Queensland CEO Mark Handley congratulated the Moreton Bay Regional Council on choosing to build such a fantastic facility for the community.
“The tennis centre in Narangba will be an important asset for all ages in the Moreton Bay area because fundamentally we believe that playing tennis makes life better,” he said.
“Tennis is a safe sport that delivers physical, mental and social benefits and that is why Tennis Queensland is so excited to partner with the Council.
“We look forward to playing our part in bringing a hub of family friendly activity to life and seeing the sport of tennis grow even further in the Moreton Bay Region.”
Tennis Queensland will manage the precinct for three years to help a new resident tennis club get established as the head lessee for the facility, and have a tennis coach appointed by the club for the delivery of coaching services and day to day operations management.
