While a La Nina weather system is forecast to bring heavy rains this summer, Council is reminding residents who rely on water tanks not to leave anything to chance.
Last year Council trucked water into Dayboro and made Council taps around Samford available for public use to help residents avoid a drought disaster.
Mayor Peter Flannery said the time to check water tank levels was now.
“If you’re already running low, put in an order with your usual water carrier now so you don’t run dry,” he said.
“We’ve already hit trigger point three and have written to Seqwater asking them what their plan to support residents is.
“Council will work with Seqwater and Unitywater to review the drought response plan, because I’m keen for residents to receive more regular notification of water supply levels and advance notification of when restrictions may occur.”
Dayboro is not connected to the SEQ Water Grid and relies on its own water supply from bores in the North Pine River, which stopped flowing last year due to the lack of rainfall.
Councillor Darren Grimwade helped launch the Warner community fill station on Samsonvale Road in July this year and said similar connections were needed out west.
“It’s a great system and I’ve been speaking with Unitywater about the need for similar facilities in communities like Samford and Highvale,” he said.
“Water is charged at $4.35 for 1000 litres, which was consistent with residential water pricing.
“It’s super easy to use, you can pay for water with a debit or credit card at the fill station, and all you need to bring is your own hose and hose connection to access the tap.
“Memories of last year’s dire situation are fresh and painful for many residents in the western stretch of Moreton Bay Region, so locals need to get prepared now in case the predicted La Nina rains don’t come.
“If you do need to conserve water some of the easiest ways to that are limiting showers to four minutes, only watering the garden in the early morning or late afternoon and obviously only using dishwashers and washing machines when they’re full.”
