Design works for a brand new $750,000 adventure playground at The Mill are set to start, with Council today awarding the contract to Playscape Creations.

Mayor Allan Sutherland said this exciting project was about delivering on the promise to ensure that The Mill PDA precinct would be a space for the whole community to own and enjoy.

“This adventure playground will be situated within The Oval precinct – a massive $9 million dollar park that will become an icon of our region,” he said.

“The adventure playground will be an integral component of the overall concept, designed to blend into the surrounding open spaces and link with vegetation to provide truly unique play experiences.

“It will have separate playgrounds to challenge both teenagers and younger kids.

“The junior zone will have swings, climbing structures, a spinner and all-abilities play elements while the area for older kids will have a zip line, climbing wall and obstacles.

“Additionally, we’re going to build an amphitheatre for outdoor theatre events and will look to ground-breaking projects like Munro Martin Park in Cairns for design inspiration.

“There’ll even be a water play zone with tipping buckets, water guns and water-friendly play structures to keep kids busy.

“Importantly, we’re going to revegetate the areas to the west, south and east of The Oval using endemic flora species to grow our local ecosystem.

“Established trees to the west, south and east will be retained and protected and I’m pleased to say no vegetation clearing is proposed as part of these works.

“The Oval will become a regional park destination in its own right and be an essential piece of the ‘live, work, play’ philosophy behind the Mill PDA.

“Like New Farm Park it will provide outdoor barbeques, gathering spaces, picnic seating, gardens, outdoor movie opportunities and even an informal cricket pitch in recognition of the area’s historic use.

“It will be enclosed by shade trees and boast attractive terracing for events and competition spectators. Concrete steps and graded concrete walkways will provide access between the oval and upper areas.”
