In a colourful summer celebration, Caboolture Regional Art Gallery is proud to present the first ever retrospective of one of Queensland’s most celebrated painters at a free exhibition next month.

Known for his masterful handling of colour, John Rigby was part of a group of Brisbane artists at the forefront of contemporary art in the 1950s and 60s.

Spokesperson for Libraries Cr Denise Sims said the works demonstrate Rigby’s progression as an artist, from his subdued earlier works through to his signature style of bright and bold canvases.

“The exhibition looks at Rigby’s long career focusing on his passions for travel, Queensland, meeting new people and his family, “ she said

“The exhibition is presented through the eyes of John’s three children Mark, Renee and Tony.

“Everyone is welcome to attend the official opening on December 7 where there will be a guided tour and a chance to chat to Rigby’s Children.”

Rigby’s son Mark said stories of their dad and their experiences with his artworks are told throughout the exhibition including his dedication to wife Margaret.

“Mum was Dad’s favourite model for sixty years,” he said.

“Other portraits include Russ Hinze, John Molvig, Verlie Just, Pat Hoffie and Cecilia McNally.”

Cr Sims said the exhibition is just one of many vivid displays that are set to liven up Caboolture Hub in coming months.

“There is a raft of free art and craft activities throughout the month of January as part of our school holiday program .

“Coming along to one of these workshops is a great way to beat the heat and give the kids something creative to do during the Christmas break.”

Other upcoming events include an en plein air adult art workshop series, Summer Family Fun Day and a special Valentine’s Day event.

The exhibition John Rigby: Monumental colour will be at Caboolture Regional Art Gallery from 4 December 2019 to 15 February 2020.
