Wildlife safety fencing will be installed along Dohles Rocks Road in Kallangur, following car collisions with native animals in the area.

Moreton Bay Regional Mayor Peter Flannery said the $264,000 project will deliver 920 metres of koala-proof fencing, following a vote at today’s Council meeting.

“We need to do everything we can to keep our native wildlife safe, especially along busy roads,” Mayor Flannery said.

“In order to erect the fencing there will be a need to clear some vegetation, which will be offset by planting three time the number of removed trees as new koala vegetation and habitat to support the local koala population.

“I’m very pleased to announce that these works will be delivered by a local firm, Conbro Pty Ltd based in Narangba.

“Our new ‘Local Preference’ policy is already seeing more local contracts going to more local firms, which is more important than ever as we work to help local businesses and our economy rebound from coronavirus restrictions.

“I want to again encourage local businesses to ensure they are registered with Council via VendorPanel to be involved in upcoming projects.”

The Mayor said a key highlight of Council’s upcoming 2020-21 Budget (Friday 26) will be a focus on the environment and preserving Moreton Bay’s ecological diversity.

Deputy Mayor Denise Sims said protecting native wildlife and habitat is a priority for Council.

“The ultimate goal of projects like this is to reduce the risk of wildlife crossing Dohles Rocks Road and the fauna exclusion fence will add to the Fauna Underpass already installed during the Moreton Bay Rail Link project to help protect our wildlife,” she said.

“The installation of fauna exclusion fencing in Kallangur will help make our roads safer both for Fauna and drivers by reducing distractions”.

The project will commence in late July and take four weeks to complete, weather depending.
