Moreton Bay Regional Council has taken proactive measures to assist residents with social distancing, to try to prevent any acceleration in the spread of Coronavirus.
Acting Mayor Mike Charlton said Council programs have been suspended and some facilities closed to minimise opportunities for the virus to spread.
“Moreton Bay Region is not immune to the Coronavirus pandemic, but we must all do whatever it takes to slow the spread of this aggressive virus,” he said.
“As such we have closed most of our venues and are awaiting advice from the federal government on the operation of swimming pools and aquatic centres.
“The Redcliffe Entertainment Centre has closed its doors in the interests of public safety and the venue is currently working to refund patrons for any tickets they had already bought.
“We have also suspended Council-run public programs in our libraries, galleries, museums and parks.
“We have already closed four of our five caravan parks to new tourists to stop the spread of coronavirus to permanent residents, who are in many cases elderly citizens.
“Given the current medical advice from health professionals, these actions by Council are vital to helping safeguard our community as we all work to limit the spread of the virus however we can. Especially ahead of the winter period.
“We will continue to monitor this unfolding situation and advise when programs, activities and facilities return to their usual operating hours.
“I want to stress the importance of practicing good hygiene to protect yourself against infection and prevent the virus spreading.
“If you have symptoms like a fever, cough, sore throat, fatigue and shortness of breath – seek medical advice.
“Do not present at a hospital or at your doctor’s surgery without calling ahead first.
“For advice or assistance you can call the coronavirus hotline on 1800 020 080.
“Council will continue to take the best advice from Federal and State Governments until the situation is brought under control, and keep ratepayers informed of the latest updates.”
