Samford Valley entrepreneurial teacher-turned-farmer Jenni Guse has a vision to support local farmers and revolutionise the way we consume produce in Moreton Bay.

The Millen Farm chairperson is one of four extraordinary panellists who will appear at Pine Rivers Heritage Museum’s for Moreton Bay Regional Council’s new Conversation Starter series.

Acting Mayor Mike Charlton said everyone should be doing whatever possible to support farmers who’ve battled everything from droughts to floods and fires in recent months.

“This is a must-attend event if you are passionate about supporting farmers – including our local producers in Moreton Bay – and the great thing is it’s free,” Cr Charlton said.

“You will be absolutely inspired by the four panellists who are all making a difference to the farming landscape in their own unique way.

“The director of Drought Angels will be headlining the panel with three locals who are all doing amazing things in their own fields.”

Millen Farm is a community-run farm that hosts a weekly marketplace in Samford.

It also operates educational workshops with the overall aim to promote urban agriculture and to encourage people to eat local produce.

The farm recently purchased a new cold room with $6080 received from a council Community Facilities Grant.

“I had a strong sense of what was a fair return to farmers. I felt that a closer connection between farmer and consumer could bring about a fairer returns to farmers,” Millen Farm’s Ms Guse said.

“The other reason we started Millen Farm is around health; if you don’t have a nutrient dense soil, then you can’t grow nutrient dense vegetables. When people spray pesticides and use artificial fertilisers – the consumer eats that.

“We would really like people to connect to that vision of having that connection to farming and eating organically and seasonally.”

Other panellists include Wamuran-based LuvaBerry owner Amanda Schultz who is an advocate for ‘war on waste’ and Flora Bradley, leader of Redcliffe-based voluntary group Ag Bag, which raises money for drought-stricken farmers through an innovative recycling project.

Conversation Starter: Supporting Local Farmers is a free event hosted at Pine Rivers Heritage Museum, 901-949 Dayboro Road, Whiteside at 10-11:30am February 15.
