Good News! Council’s award-winning disability access and inclusion program Backstage Pass has been extended to cater for the growing demand of families in Redcliffe.
“Many families who have a child with autism or individual assistance needs cannot simply venture to popular events hosted by our various libraries,” Council spokesperson for Lifestyle and Amenity Cr Denise Sims said.
“High levels of noise and lighting can create a sensory overload, making it difficult for them to participate, so we created the Backstage Pass program to give families their own time to experience a whole range of fun activities.
“From Sunday, March 8 this popular free program will now be available monthly at Redcliffe Library for those families who find daytime events easier to manage.
“While the highly successful North Lakes and Caboolture sessions will continue to deliver the award-winning experiences monthly as well.”
Backstage Pass won the Disability Access and Inclusion Award at the National Awards for Local Government 2019 and has received glowing praise from families and disability support organisations.
“My son Zak attended your Library Backstage Pass session, in partnership with Sensory Souls, last night. Zak had an absolute ball and I thank you all for allowing Zak the opportunity to attend your event,” one testimonial read.
“My daughter who doesn’t like talking found it really easy to talk to your staff. She especially loved their knowledge in fan fiction,” said another.
Some of the activities featured at Backstage Pass include:
- Robot Technology, Harry Potter Games, Pixel Art, 3D Augmented Reality, Block Building.
- Lycra Sensory Tunnel, Caterpillar Sandwich with oversized cushions.
- Sensory Storytime, music and scarf play, nursery rhymes, and bubbles.
- Back Room Tour of work areas/processes.
- Collection displays at each activity including a display of support resources.
