It’s the summer send-off party that locals love and it will be back again in 2021!

Moreton Bay Regional Council today voted to continue its support for the popular ‘Aussie Arvo’ event at Lawnton Aquatic Centre through a $22,000 Community Operational Support Grant.

Mayor Peter Flannery said it was important to support local events in the wake of COVID-19.

“With summer just around the corner, beat the heat and make a splash at the ‘Aussie Arvo’ event this 2021 Australia Day,” he said.

“Council has been supporting this annual event since 2017, and we’re proud to do that again next year.

“After the tough year we’ve faced, it was important we gave the community something to look forward to and support.

“I know many residents have missed getting out to our events this year, so please grab your family and mates and make an arvo of it!”

Three local councillors contributing funding through the annual Local Community Support Grant: Deputy Mayor Denise Sims (Div 7), Cr Mick Gillam (Div 8) and Cath Tonks (Div 9).

The Deputy Mayor said the event would be something the whole family could enjoy.

“I look forward to seeing those young and young at heart having a great time in the pool at this great family day out,” Cr Sims said.

“If you want to celebrate Australia Day by the water without the hassle of travelling – this is the perfect event for you.”

Councillor Mick Gillam (Div 8) encouraged locals to come along to enjoy the free entertainment.

“This free event is a huge hit with the locals, and one many have begun looking forward to each summertime,” he said.

“In past years we’ve seen more than 4,000 people come through the turn style gates, but in 2021 that simply won’t be the case.

“We’ll make sure all the right measures are in place to ensure it’s a safe event without losing any of the fun the day brings.”

Councillor Cath Tonks (Div 9) said she looked forward to seeing everyone enjoying themselves.

“After a difficult year for many residents, I’m really looking forward to celebrating Australia Day, this will be a fun day at the pool for everyone!” she said.

“I’m also proud to support the Lawnton Swim Club, who continues to offer opportunities for our community to feel confident and safe in the water, something that’s so important as we come into summer and start swimming.”
