Construction of a brand new $3.7 million BMX track in Brendale is about to get underway, enabling Moreton Bay to host national and international level competitions.

Mayor Peter Flannery said it was an exciting contract that would set the tone for a busy 2021.

“After all the difficulties of 2020, I’m looking forward to exciting projects like this getting underway and completed in 2021 and we kick our economy back into gear” he said.

“This facility will attract competitions providing a boost to the local economy, especially to hotels and the hospitality industry.

“I especially want to thank the state for their $1.5 million contribution, which has made this a reality.”

Member for Pine Rivers, Nikki Boyd said she was thrilled to partner with Council on this project to lift community spirits and boost the local economy.

“A new home for Pine Rivers BMX will provide not only a new facility for the club, but a new standard for the Moreton Bay region,” she said.

“The club will have more capacity to meet its needs for the long term and will see long term economic stimulus when it hosts regional, state and national competitions.

“We know Pine Rivers BMX already is the home to world champions, we hope this facility will see many more local stars in the future.”

Cr Cath Tonks (Div 9) said it would be a gamechanger.

“This will be a national grade competition track with lighting to enable night races, a brand new clubhouse, spectator seating and parking,” she said.

“Pine Rivers BMX Club have well and truly outgrown their base at England Park, so I know they can’t wait to move in here.

“I’m just so excited that we’re diversifying our array of elite sporting facilities, if we keep this up soon Moreton Bay will be able to host almost any athletic competition you can think of!”

Minister for Local Government Steven Miles thanked Council for awarding the contract so quickly.

“The Unite and Recover Community Stimulus Package will help our councils build new and upgraded infrastructure and give their communities’ economies a boost,” he said.

“From Noosa to the Gold Coast and from Toowoomba to Moreton Bay, councils estimate more than 1500 jobs will be created or supported through 63 projects for the communities.

“This program is allowing the councils to fast-track new infrastructure and community assets, and in doing so, helping to get the communities back on their feet faster.”
