Rather than talking about building the ‘communities of tomorrow’, the Local Government Association of Queensland (LGAQ) is challenging the leaders of tomorrow to start that work now.

The LGAQ today launched its ‘Better Communities’ smartphone app – a free, city simulation game where players can become the planner of their own virtual town.

Moreton Bay Region Mayor Peter Flannery said he wanted to see local students get involved, to go into the running for a whopping $2,500 prize.

“The LGAQ is offering $2,500 each to the primary school and high school-aged students who build the best community balancing economic, environmental and community factors,” he said.

“All you have to do is download the app, then put your skills and imagination to the test in planning the development of a virtual community.

“But I warn you, it’s not all smooth sailing, working in local government is full of challenges which are incorporated into the app’s storyline.

“It means you’ll have to define policy priorities and make the difficult decisions relating to budgets, environmental protections, employment rates, development, facility construction, roads, and more.

“Honestly, the app gives a great insight into the tough choices civic leaders must make.

“Who knows, the app might uncover the next generation of local town planners and community leaders right here in Moreton Bay?

“So I encourage everyone to take up the challenge. It’s the perfect boredom-buster for young people staying at home during the pandemic, especially with prizes up for grabs.”

Students have until the end of Term 2, 5:00 PM Friday June 26, to enter the competition.

Entry and terms and conditions can be access via the Better Communities app, free to download from Android and Apple stores.
