Moreton Bay Regional Council is once again throwing its support behind a great Australian tradition: Clean Up Australia Day.
On Sunday 1 March the annual litter clean up celebrates its 30th anniversary and Acting Mayor Mike Charlton says the popular event shows no signs of slowing down with age.
“Clean Up Australia Day is now the country’s largest community-based environment event,” he said.
“That’s an absolutely remarkable achievement considering the idea just came from an average Aussie bloke, Ian Kiernan, deciding to tidy up his local beach.
“I encourage everyone to take a page out of Ian’s book and register a clean up site as a volunteer to help clean up at a local site.
“As Anne-Marie Bonneau says: We don’t need a handful of people doing zero waste perfectly, we need millions of people doing it imperfectly.”
Waste Spokesperson Cr Adam Hain said Clean Up Australia Day is one of the most rewarding events to be involved with.
“Each year thousands of volunteers selflessly take part in Clean Up Australia Day here in Moreton Bay and as a council that’s something we’re very proud to continue to support,” Cr Hain said.
“It is important we keep our region looking beautiful and take care of the environment at the same time.
“So grab a pair of gloves and a rubbish and recycling bag and help fight pollution.”
Visit the Clean Up Australia Day website to register a site or find existing sites to volunteer. Council advises site coordinators to register at least two weeks prior to the event.
Please contact Clean Up Australia if you have any issues registering, or contact council for further assistance.
