Clean up Australia Day 2021

Moreton Bay Region fisherman won’t have to worry about hooking their line to an old thong or car tyre, because Clean Up Australia Day volunteers have already beaten them to it.

Mayor Peter Flannery praised the hard work of volunteers across 140 different Clean Up sites to pick up more than 2.2 tonnes of waste last week, including some questionable items.

“It’s heart-warming to know that after everything the public has been through with COVID-19, residents are still willing to get out in force to participate in Clean Up Australia Day,” he said.

“This is a fantastic initiative that Council has been supporting for well over a decade and last week was only just shy of our record of 144 registered sites so that’s a fantastic result.

“On the flipside of that it’s disappointing that a day like this is required at all.

“Volunteers removed 3.4 tonnes of waste consisting of all sorts of things from car tyres, thongs, Styrofoam, car parts, clothing, plastic straws and literally thousands of cigarette butts.

“While we love our Clean Up volunteers, we can’t rely on them to give our entire region a makeover once a year.

“We have so many wonderful natural environments in Moreton Bay Region from Hayes Inlet, to the Hills District and out west through the Samford Valley and Lake Kurwongbah up to Woodford.

“So please make sure you play your part to help preserve the region for your children’s children and the flora and fauna that call our region home.”
