Council will pursue three dog owners in court, following serious attacks on people and other animals.
Mayor Peter Flannery said he wanted to assure locals and visitors to Moreton Bay that any animal who presents a public safety threat will not be shown any leniency.
“Given the seriousness of these attacks, Council has chosen to prosecute the offenders as the most appropriate action,” he said.
“We have seen serious injuries to both people and animals from dog attacks in the past, hence our zero-tolerance policy towards irresponsible dog owners.
“Council is the responsible agency for enforcement and regulation under the Animal Management (Dogs and Cats) Act 2008, and that’s a responsibility myself and the Councillors take very seriously.
“Moreton Bay has a dog attack rate well above the state average and we’re determined to bring those figures down as quickly as possible, starting today at the first Council meeting of the year.”
These matters will now proceed to prosecution via the Magistrates Court.
It follows a decision in November last year to pursue several offenders in relation to irresponsible pet ownership each fined $266.
That same month Council was successful in prosecuting a dangerous dog owner for his role in an attack on a 17-year-old girl and a Council officer.
