Authorities are continuing to praise Moreton Bay locals for leading the way in southeast Queensland, in terms of abiding by social distancing restrictions.

Despite the Council being the third most populous in the country, there have been just 11 locally acquired transitions of COVID-19.

Mayor Peter Flannery has emphasised the importance of continuing to follow the rules through the slow transition back to normality.

“I’m more excited than anyone that we get to welcome visitors from up to 50km away this weekend and I think we’re all heartened by the Prime Minister saying Aussies deserve an early mark,” Mayor Flannery said.

“But we aren’t out of the woods yet and we need to continue to do the right thing, especially as restrictions are eased.

“So I am asking residents and visitors to abide by the regulations outlined by the State Government, especially as they’ll have extra police out on the beat to enforce social distancing and issue fines if necessary.

“Council’s playgrounds, BBQ’s, libraries, pools and off-leash dog areas remain off limits for now in accordance with state advice.

“People’s safety will always be our top priority, and social distancing remains the best defence against this pandemic.

“When we leave our home to go for a picnic, or a drive to a park, or visit a nature reserve, we do need to keep in mind not to become too relaxed and disregard the social distancing rules that are still being enforced.

“So please make use of these freedoms, it will provide an absolutely vital boost to our tourism, retail and hospitality sectors – the areas of our economy that have been hit hardest by forced shutdowns.

“Get outside and enjoy Moreton Bay’s natural attractions and grab some take-away, just stay within 50km of your home and abide by social distancing rules when in public spaces to keep you safe.”
