The finishing touches to a $6 million overhaul to Dakabin Waste Facility will get underway next month, with Council awarding the final $1 million contract today.

Moreton Bay Region Mayor Peter Flannery said locals can expect to see new safety fencing, power supply and lighting, stormwater drainage, firefighting infrastructure, CCTV security, line marking and directional signage.

“We’re not only increasing the capacity of the Dakabin Waste Transfer Station, we’re redesigning it so that locals can get in and out as quickly as possible,” he said.

“No one wants to spend their weekend waiting in a queue at the dump and businesses can’t afford to lose that valuable time either, certainly not right now.

“The whole $6 million project is a complete overhaul that will boast improved road linkages, clearer line markings and signage, a new community recycling facility.

“For commercial customers, there are new roofs on each of the dump’s 20 waste transfer bays so that even weather doesn’t disrupt a trip to the tip.

“So this is an investment in our economy as much as it’s an investment in essential infrastructure.

“Council’s also committed to greening our region, so by building a new Waste Transfer Station and recycling facility we’ll be sending less recyclable material into landfill and ensuring the proper disposal of waste like soft plastic, small batteries, mobile phone, printer cartridges and more.”

Division 7 Councillor and Deputy Mayor Denise Sims said the redesigned waste facility will create more space to dispose and recycle waste.

“Moreton Bay Region is in the unique position of having available land space for dumping, whereas other Councils have already run out,” she said.

“It seems everyone’s been cleaning up at home or doing some DIY during COVID-19 because the amount of waste being taken to our tips has more than doubled this year compared to the same time last year.

“That’s why it’s so important for us to maximise the efficiency and lifespan of these important facilities.

“I want us to be able to tell our grandkids we made the necessary decisions to ensure a sustainable future for them and future generations.

“So I’d especially like to thank all our waste services staff for working so hard, right around the clock, to keep our tips open while also adhering to social distancing restrictions.”

AllenCon Pty Ltd was awarded the $996,567 contact to complete the final upgrades.

Stage two works are scheduled to commence in early September and will take approximately 15 weeks to be completed, weather depending.
