Moreton Bay Regional Council has entered into a Voluntary Conservation Agreement (VCA) with the landholders on an ecologically important parcel of land at Clear Mountain.

The Voluntary Conservation Agreement for the property will conserve the native fauna and fauna on approximately 6 hectares of the 9-hectare property, in perpetuity.

Mayor Peter Flannery said it was a significant contribution to the environment of the region.

“The generous landowners don’t want to be identified, this is an entirely ecological decision on their part and they aren’t doing it for any recognition,” Mayor Flannery said.

“So we are humbled and happy to work with them to ensure the environmental values of their land are protected for future generations.

“The Clear Mountain area is a critical link between our developed areas like Eatons Hill and Warner out to the western hinterland, so the environmental value of this property to our biodiversity and fauna can’t be understated.

“Especially as we work to improve and connect the wildlife corridors around our region.

“This will be the fifteenth Voluntary Conservation Agreement with Council, adding to the 185 hectares of landscapes we currently have under our protection through this program.

“Council will support the landholders with access to financial incentives and expert advice to help manage the covenant area.”

The VCA program supports landowners to protect and enhance habitat for a wide variety of threatened flora and fauna species such as the koala, greater glider, glossy black cockatoo, grey-headed flying fox, giant barred frog, powerful owl and marbled frogmouth.

A VCA is a legally binding agreement between Council and a landholder to protect the environmental values on the landholder’s property in perpetuity.
