Severe storms, floods, fires: If the worst was to happen, would you be prepared?

With storm season approaching the state government is again urging Queenslanders to use this year’s Get Ready Week (October 12-17) as an opportunity to prepare for summer.

“Don’t get caught out and don’t become complacent, the only way to protect your family is by being prepared,” said Mayor Peter Flannery.

“Council is hosting information sessions in 10 Council libraries throughout Get Ready Week where locals can drop in and get advice on how to protect your family and property through the upcoming storm season.

“You can get tailored information on your risks, where to find the latest information, how to prepare and you’ll even go into the running for your own family emergency kit.

“While we can’t prevent disasters and storms in Moreton Bay, we can prepare for them to minimise the impacts on our community.

“If you can’t get to one of our library information sessions, you can always jump on Council’s website to learn how to prepare your home, school and business and block out a weekend to get it sorted.

“Clean up the backyard, have a chat with your household about how to prepare, check on your insurance, and most importantly, make sure you’re getting the latest information and severe weather warnings by signing up to MoretonAlert.

“Council has also received more than $125,000 of Get Ready funding thanks to the Queensland Reconstruction Authority, which will help Council support the most vulnerable in our community.

The funding will assist Council across four key projects:

  • developing specialised information and alerts for locals from diverse language backgrounds
  • supporting locals living with a disability to develop preparedness plans
  • providing resources for educators and people with low literacy levels to prepare and respond to disasters
  • upskilling Council staff with disaster preparedness training
