It’s the sport known for stunning backdrops, and now the beauty of the Redcliffe Peninsula will stun crowds this week for the 2021 Queensland Inclusive Golf Championship.

Over two days of golfing action from 4th – 5th March, athletes and supporters will travel to the Redcliffe Golf Club for the first event of the 2021 World Rankings for Golfers with a Disability Schedule.

Open to all golfers with a physical, sensory or intellectual disability, Mayor Peter Flannery said he looked forward to welcoming athletes to the region for the first tee off this Thursday.

“I’m thrilled the inclusive golf championship is taking place in the Moreton Bay Region, as we work towards becoming the most accessible tourism and events destination in South-East Queensland,” Mayor Flannery said.

“With the majority of competitors and supporters visiting from outside the region, we’re expecting more than $110,000 to be pumped into the local economy.

“We’re seeing more accessible events choosing the Moreton Bay Region – in the same month we’re also hosting 15 sports across the region for the 2021 Special Olympics Queensland State Games.”

Local Councillor Karl Winchester (Div 6) said the event was sure to be a swinging success given its location.

“Call me bias, but the beauty of the Redcliffe Peninsula is something worth travelling to see!” Cr Winchester said.

“With a backdrop to rival the best golf courses in the country, the Redcliffe Golf Club is a fantastic facility to not only showcase the beauty of our region but also experience world-class sporting service.”

Golf Australia’s Senior Manager of Inclusion Christian Hamilton said he was delighted to welcome Council as its event partner for the championship.

“It’s fantastic to have the support of Moreton Bay Regional Council at this year’s championship and to showcase the region to the strong field that we are assembling for the event,” Mr Hamilton said.

“New South Wales players Geoff Nicholas and Cameron Pollard, both of whom have played in the Australian All Abilities Championship, will challenge local talent for the title.

“We’re also seeing more women and girls compete and join the rankings which has been another focal point of our work with Vision 2025.

“Talented Queenslanders Kathryn Wilson and junior Natascha Tennent will join the stroke and nett rankings at the championship and will compete alongside Amanda Patterson, who also joins the stableford rankings this year.”
