The children of Moreton Bay Region are asking adults to rethink the way we see waste management.
Mayor Peter Flannery said the 2020 Sustainability Champion Award winners from seven local schools and early learning centres have showed how it’s possible to make a lasting change to the environment with minimal effort.
“Sometimes it takes a child to make an adult realise we can be better, and that’s exactly the case when it comes to the Moreton Bay Regional Council 2020 Sustainability Champions,” he said.
“Over the past two years these schools and early learning centres have come up with strategies to improve their waste management by reusing, reducing and recycling materials.
“The amazing thing is they’ve been able to minimise their waste by an average of 20-30% and increase their recycling by an average of 30%.
“We all have the ability to make these small changes to our daily routines that will have a huge impact on the environment we live in and the futures of our children.
“Many of you already live sustainably, but we all need to work together as a community if we’re going to make significant change.
“If these children can lead the way, the very least we can do is play our part – so I urge you all to think about how you manage your waste at home.
“Could you be recycling more than you are? Are you disposing your waste in the correct bin? Is there an opportunity to compost food scraps and vegetation at home? Are you refusing or reusing plastics rather than throwing them out after one use?
“These are just some of the questions you should be posing to yourself each day in order to make a difference.”
