Moreton Bay Regional Council has approved more than $5million for the redevelopment of Council’s Redcliffe Administration Centre into a new home for the Redcliffe Art Gallery and office space for community groups.
At Council’s Coordination Committee Meeting this week, Mayor Allan Sutherland said the funding boost was a win for senior groups and the arts community.
“By creating a central location to house the new gallery, customer service centre, Redcliffe’s University of Third Age (U3A) and the Redcliffe Seniors Computer Club, we will bolster the area’s reputation as a hub for community and culture,” he said.
The overhaul will convert the ground floor into a modern gallery with over 1000m2 of floor space for exhibitions, as well as a brand new foyer, courtyard, maker and curatorial space and storage.
“This project is about building community capacity at its core,” he said.
“Alongside U3A’s commitment to life-long learning and Redcliffe Seniors Computer Club’s dedication to digital literacy education, the new gallery will exhibit the region’s creativity, and also host travelling exhibitions to inspire locals and visitors alike.”
Councillor for Division 6 Koliana Winchester said the project would also bring other added benefits.
“The building is also located in close proximity to public transport making travel easier and convenient for seniors,” she said.
“This space is an important one for our residents so I am pleased we’ve kept a community focus at the heart of these renovations.”
Councillor for Division 5 James Houghton said residents could still keep in contact with staff and their Divisional Councillor while works were underway.
“If you need to speak to our staff, then head to Redcliffe Library where Council’s customer service team has been temporarily relocated to.
“Council won’t meet in the Administration Centre during renovations and any requests for one-on-one meetings with local Councillors will be held at Redcliffe Library.”
Works will commence between April and May and take 36 weeks to complete, weather permitting.
