Mayor Peter Flannery committed to ensuring community groups wouldn’t be left to slip through the cracks on the road to economic recovery, and Council is already delivering on that promise.
More than 130 local clubs and organisations have shared in an initial $4.6 million cash injection for essential works and upgrades thanks to Council’s COVID-19 Community Infrastructure Revitalisation Grant program.
Mayor Flannery says that’s just the start.
“We will be giving out 14 times the usual amount of funding to support local sports, community groups, clubs and volunteer organisations,” he said.
“We’re providing amounts of up to $50,000 to revitalise community facilities, to ensure they’re ready to reopen as soon as coronavirus restrictions are lifted.
“This initiative is in response to calls from locals, and it’s an ideal time for works to be delivered because there’s less disruption to local sport or community activities.
“The Community Infrastructure Revitalisation Grant program will see community halls repainted, upgrades to sporting field lighting, refurbishments and much more, in preparation for their return to standard operating conditions.
“This isn’t just an investment in infrastructure, it’s also an investment in our communities to ensure kids have something to look forward to on the other side of this pandemic.
“It’s about keeping tradies on the tools and cash flowing into our local economy, which is a key part of our region’s roadmap to economic recovery.”
