New waste levy reporting starts 1 July

New waste reporting requirements linked to the introduction of the State Government waste levy will take effect next week (Monday 1 July), with waste facility users being informed to expect delays.

Although there will be no change to waste facility access or payments for most households, users will notice a difference regarding how waste is recorded and disposed of at council waste facilities.

Council spokesperson for Asset Construction and Maintenance, Cr Adam Hain, said the changes were related to the introduction of the State Government waste levy.

“The user information required from 1 July will make the check-in and check-out process at waste facilities longer, so it is strongly recommended that residents try to plan future visits to minimise their time on site,” he said.

“One hint is to understand how your local waste facility operates, and that can be done via council’s website,” he said.

“Information includes usage trends that provide an indication of historical peak and off-peak times at most sites, lists of accepted materials, and suggestions on how to plan a trip.

“Key tips include avoiding weekends, choosing off-peak hours, taking only one type of waste, and if possible postponing your visit until you have a full load.

“Knowing exactly what you can place in your kerbside bins, and putting them to full use, can also reduce the need to visit a waste facility.”

From 1 July, State Government legislation requires users of a council waste facility to:

  • have their registration recorded
  • show proof of Moreton Bay Region residency (photo identification)
  • declare the type or types of waste being delivered
  • -verify the nature of the waste (domestic or commercial)
  • be weighed upon entry and exit (if the site has a weighbridge)
  • enter a weighbridge site more than once if bringing in multiple types of waste

Cr Hain said council would have additional resources and staff at waste sites to help users with the transition to the new reporting and disposal requirements.

“However, the community should expect delays from 1 July as council begins gathering the information required under legislation,” he said.

“The community’s patience and understanding is appreciated as staff ensure council meets the new reporting obligations.”

Under State Government legislation business, industry and commercial operators will be charged the State Government waste levy for all materials going to landfill, as well as any regulated waste unless an exemption applies.

“Businesses are encouraged to look at how they can reduce waste, separate waste streams and recycle as efficiently as possible to help reduce the amount of waste going to landfill, which in turn will reduce their State Government waste levy charges,” Cr Hain said.

The State Government is funding ecoBiz, a free program which helps businesses reduce their energy, water and waste costs.  More details are available at www.ecobiz.cciq.com.au
