The dark cloud of 2020 has brought many silver linings for Pine Rivers Junior League Club:

  • Celebrating their 50th anniversary this year,
  • Scoring a renewed $1 lease with Council on Wednesday; and
  • Starting work on a new $952,000 changeroom and amenities block today.

Mayor Peter Flannery turned the first sod to start work of a new changeroom and amenities block for the Pine Rivers Bears with Cr Mick Gillam (Div 8) and Kurwongbah MP Shane King.

“This project is an investment in our local economy, an investment in community infrastructure, and an investment in the future growth of sport in this region,” he said.

“It’s also a fantastic example of what can be achieved when different levels of government work together, and I thank the state government for partnering with us to make this project a reality.

“On top of the $387,000 secured by Shane King, Council has contributed $565,000 towards building these new facilities which will boast four universal changerooms, referee room, accessible amenities and a game day operations room.”

Member for Kurwongbah Shane King said Pine Rivers Junior Rugby League Club had a proven record of keeping kids involved in sport since 1970.

“As Queenslanders unite and recover in the fight against coronavirus, it’s critical that we invest in the clubs that have served our community for many decades and make this such a great place to live,” he said.

“Coronavirus is a massive reminder of how important it is to have good physical and mental health, and sport is key to that.

“So I applaud Moreton Bay Regional Council’s investment into grassroots sport and their ambitions to bring more elite-level competitions here, to create new economic opportunities.”

Divisional Councillor Mick Gillam said he was pleased to see this project come to fruition for his local community.

“The club’s future is dependent on having facilities to meet their growing popularity, especially now that they play in the Brisbane Rugby League competition and more people than ever are using the Mathieson Park sports grounds,” he said.

“The club has been working hard to expand their membership by encouraging girls to play footy.

“The new facilities will support universal participation at the club for years to come.

“I think they’ve got a big future in this region and I’m excited to be here for the start of works today.”
