As the weather cools down and conditions become less hazardous, Moreton Bay Regional Council will begin its annual planned burn program

Mayor-Elect Cr Peter Flannery said the proactive approach to fire prevention across the region would begin in Kippa-Ring on Wednesday.

“Council is scheduling a planned burn, commonly known as a hazard reduction or controlled burn, at the Chelsea Street Environmental Reserve on Wednesday 22 April,” Cr Flannery said.

“Weather permitting, the seven hectare operation will begin mid-afternoon and continue into the early evening.

“Anyone with asthma and those sensitive to smoke close by are advised to shut their windows and stay indoors next Wednesday and Thursday.

“Depending on weather conditions, smoke may be visible from the surrounding areas of Kippa-Ring and Rothwell, however it will eventually disperse over the bushland.

“Fire Management crews will remain onsite until the area is deemed safe and will return to patrol the following day.

“Our experienced team will ensure there is no risk to residents, but as a precaution people are advised to keep away from the burn site during the immediate days following.

“The purpose of a planned burn is to eliminate ground fuel across large areas of bushland in preparation for the upcoming bushfire season which typically begins in late July.

“By practising planned burns such as this, Council will continue to minimise risk to the natural environment while protecting the community from potential bushfires.”
