Just two weeks after receiving Ministerial approval for Moreton Bay Region’s proposed Planning Scheme Amendments, Council has officially adopted the plan.

Mayor Allan Sutherland said it would provide planning clarity to start the new year and thanked Minister Cameron Dick for the lightning fast turnaround.

“This was a record speed for turning around such a complex document and that’s thanks in large part to the state department for working so closely with us,” he said.

“The assistance we’ve received from the Department of State Development, Manufacturing, Infrastructure and Planning to ensure the progress and ultimately the approval of the amendment by the Minister has been invaluable to our planners and to our Council.

“The amendment has been designed to address implementation issues identified since the planning scheme came into effect in 2016.

“The adoption of Tailored Amendment 1 today means we are ready to hit the ground running in 2020.

“This amended planning scheme sets a clear vision for development in the region with streamlined approvals processes, a new planning scheme policy and changes to existing policies for improved functionality.”

Mayor Allan Sutherland said it had been a long journey but the end product is worth it to ensure a range of competing interests are considered and addressed.

“In 2020, Council will commence its review of secondary dwellings and the next generation neighbourhood precincts, which were two key matters raised by the community during consultation,” he said.

“There’s always room for improvement but I am proud of today’s outcome, this is region shaping progress.

“It’s a testament to the hard work of Council and the staff and I’m grateful for all their efforts.”

The amendments are expected to take effect on 29 January 2020.
