Locals are being asked to rethink their waste this coming Sunday ahead of International Composting Awareness Week.

Mayor Peter Flannery encouraged everyone across the region, from small businesses to family households, to get their hands dirty by getting involved.

“Council is committed to greening our region and there are small changes we can all make to make a big difference in the war against waste,” Mayor Flannery said.

“Some food waste is unavoidable, but that doesn’t mean it has to go to landfill, and gardening is the perfect pastime during a time of social distancing. So I say get involved with composting!

“The are more options than you probably realise – from compost bins and tumblers, to worm farms, and even bokashi bins for your kitchen.”

Local waste warriors Penny and Warren Mack have been composting for almost 40 years to not only reduce their waste but also grow their own organic produce.

“We have a worm garden and four bins we use for composting,” Penny said.

“For us, composting is about growing organic. It’s important that we know exactly what we compost and what’s going back into our garden and veggie patch.

“Our neighbours all get involved by giving us green waste, egg cartons and any other scraps they can muster. They even know what bins to put them in now.

Penny and Warren said the best advice they can give someone who wants to start composting, is to start small and be patient.

“Even if it’s just digging a compost hole in your backyard, it’s much better than putting it in the bin,” Warren said.

“And if you don’t want to keep your compost, there’s sure to be someone like us nearby who can make use of it!”

International Composting Awareness Week is taking place from Sunday 3 May – Saturday 9 May.
