Aussie rules football is set to kick-off this year in a big way with the unveiling of Redcliffe Tigers’ new state-of-the-art home ground.
Moreton Bay Regional Council has invested $18.8 million over five years to relocate the Australian football club to Nathan Road Sports Ground.
“This is a massive day for the Tigers who are now one step closer to running out on the turf that will help deliver their next premiership success,” councillor (Div5) James Houghton said.
“After years of flooding at their current oval at Rothwell Park, the club will have the first stage of the new facilities delivered, which includes a new clubhouse, change rooms and a ground the size of the MCG, thanks to Council.
“Interest in Australian rules football in Queensland is growing rapidly and these landmark facilities will ensure the future of the sport in Redcliffe for decades to come.
“It builds on the council-delivered Moreton Bay Sports Complex and South Pine Sports Complex, which have hosted AFL preseason and AFLW matches, as well as local clubs.”
The Nathan Road Sports Ground facilities includes a senior sized AFL oval with AFL club standard lighting, two universal designed change rooms, a large clubhouse with kitchen facilities, a new club office will ample storage to cater for future growth.
The complex is bordered by landscaped wetlands and has a playground for the children.
The Tigers have been awarded a five-year lease over the facilities and a three-year permit over the grounds, which will get their first run during the club’s round 6 Anzac Day fixture.
The Tigers will also hold onto their current home at Rothwell Park until future stages of Nathan Road Sports Ground are delivered.
“We’re absolutely rapt that we will have access to the main oval for our marquee home fixture for the 2020 season,” Redcliffe Tigers president Scott Stanford said.
“Not only will it help our senior team to thrive and push for Queensland’s top tier competition, but it will allow us to grow the game through our great junior program.
“We’ve particularly seen a major spike of interest for our budding women’s’ and young girls’ teams, which is something the club is focused on expanding with the help of the new facilities.
“We want everyone to get down to the club on April 25 to pay their respects to past and present soldiers and usher in a new era of footy in Redcliffe at the same time.”
