An untouched 9.3 hectare parcel of land along Lagoon Creek north of Caboolture is proposed to be named in honour of the man who protected it for more than 60 years.
William Woolley is well known in the area for his volunteer work with St Vincent de Paul and commitment to local P&C committees, but Mayor Peter Flannery says it’s his pioneering approach to farming that’s worth remembering.
“His passion for the land and use of forward-thinking environmental practices were certainly well ahead of his time,” said the Mayor.
“After purchasing the farm in 1956, Mr Woolley refused to clear the land around Lagoon Creek even though it could serve as space for cattle or crops.
“He believed in practicing sustainable and responsible land management and was committed to preserving and enhancing the native vegetation along Lagoon Creek.”
Council is now seeking public feedback on the proposal to name the parkland at 84 Spring Lane ‘William Woolley Reserve’.
William’s widow, Monica Woolley, said her husband loved being close to nature.
“This reserve was his favourite part of the farm, he relished in its peace and quiet,” she said.
“To have this land named in his honour is a fitting tribute to a man who loved the land, loved nature and cared passionately for the environment.”
Local Councillor Adam Hain (Div 3) said Council had endorsed the proposal, but wanted locals to have their say.
“History is at the heart of Caboolture and I certainly think it’s important that we celebrate our agricultural heritage through initiatives like this, especially as our region’s population continues to grow,” he said.
“The parcel of land will be kept as a reserve, just as Mr Woolley always intended, to ensure it’s looked after and preserved for future generations to enjoy.”
